Thiefs, Beggars & Traders: On Making Money Online

The Thief, The Beggar & The Trader - On Making Money Online - CalligraphyDuring my first tries at making money online, I often encountered some kind of inner resistance to specific methods I was testing out. At several times, I had an idea I thought could work, I put in a lot of effort to get this into a state where I could put it online only to find out that I couldn’t bring myself to hit the ‘Publish’ button. The first few times I was not really aware of this, I assumed that I was just not satisfied with how my work turned out, so I kept fiddling and optimizing… but I never clicked that ‘Publish’ button.

After several iterations of this whole process, I began to realize what was going on. It was most blatant when I tried to build an online shop with customized PLR eBooks. The goal was clear: I needed to find a way to get some quick cash flow going to be able to accelerate my efforts through outsourcing. I searched for a long time to get the best PLR eBook I could find. The one I finally bought did indeed have lots of value inside, but I knew that most of the topics that were discussed in this eBook were only glossed over. I did a completely new layout for the eBook, corrected all of the typos, added some clarifications… but I could not possibly sell this under my Office No More brand, as it did not match the quality standard I had set for myself.

Change Your Life… and Lose Friends & Family?

NOTE: This was a guest post I had done a couple of months ago for a site called Apparently, this site does not exist anymore, so I decided to repost the original guest post here.

Change Your Life - Expressive Senior PortraitI have to assume that most people I know are NOT happy. They are okay, getting by, satisfied in the best of cases. We live in a society where you are taught values that have been established by the industrial revolution. You ought to get specialized in a specific field and then work diligently until you’re too old to get the work done. This kind of system sure is nice if you happen to be a factory owner, but if you are an educated individual who is in constant self-discovery and trying to have a meaningful impact on your surroundings… not so much!

Heading in the wrong direction

You see, most of us know, consciously or subconsciously, that we are heading in the wrong direction, but we stick to it. People generally assume that this is how it is supposed to be. If you try to change this situation, you will certainly encounter a lot of resistance in your immediate entourage. How dare you question the values that were passed on by your parents and grand-parents? How dare you think you need not adhere to the unwritten rules of society? How dare you demand to be truly happy? [Read more…]

NSD2: Using WooCommerce to Build an Amazon Associates Niche Site

Ants Dueling

Small Scale Duel

I have decided to participate in Pat Flynn’s Niche Site Duel 2.0. This will be a great tool to keep me accountable as well as an opportunity to build relationships in the affiliate marketing and blogging field. I intend to do regular reports on my progress here, so you can follow along and see exactly how I go about building the site and what my results are. I can’t guarantee that my niche site will be a success, but I am certain that the journey will be a very valuable one.

What is the Niche Site Duel 2.0?

In 2010, Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income was challenged to a duel by Tyrone Shum to publicly create a niche site from scratch. They both documented each of their steps on their own blogs and Pat also created a hub site that held links to many other blogs that also participated in this challenge. The corresponding blog posts had immense success and Pat’s niche site about security guard training is now earning a very respectable $2-3k per month through AdSense. [Read more…]

My Game Plan for Quitting My Day Job

Online Business Side Income CalculationsI’ve just read a truly inspiring post by Jonathan Mead over at Paid To Exist titled “How to Quit Your Day Job“. I recently discovered his blog and I’ve really enjoyed the content he and his team put out so far. If you intend to quit your day job and haven’t yet read this post, I suggest you do this now before continuing to read this article.

I’ve decided that I intend to quit my day job for some time now, and I have formed some more or less defined ideas in my head about how to proceed in order to achieve this goal. But having now read Jonathan’s article, it seems obvious that I need to transfer these ideas into a more tangible, physical form in order to let my intentions materialize inside my head.

What follows is a very specific course of action with goals and milestones which will culminate in my self-employment. By making this plan public I’ll have the added benefit of being held accountable, as well as being able to properly track and document my progress. Accountability is a very strong tool, you should always use it to your advantage. [Read more…]

Back in the saddle

Back In The SaddleI’m back in the saddle after a bit of a downtime here at Office No More. I’ve had to deal with the grave illness and subsequent loss of a parent. I still have worked sporadically on some of my niche sites, but I haven’t done any major work for a few months now.

But I now feel that my motivation picked up again and I’m trying to decide on the direction in which to focus my efforts. My initial plan was to quickly build some niche sites to get to a positive cash flow so that I can reinvest this money in software purchases and outsourcing. However, my dabbling in niche site creation has been rather half-hearted and I slowly realize that I always encounter some real resistance whenever I try to use shortcuts to get some quick cash. I am apparently really concerned about providing real value to people when I want their cash. Hehe, who’d have thought?

CommentLuv & Antispam Bee working together

I have recently added the CommentLuv plugin to my site as reported here. I looked for a good antispam plugin as a companion, as the free ‘DoFollow‘ backlinks that CommentLuv enables are sure to attract spammers. I found Antispam Bee and was quite satisfied with its functionality. I had to discover though, that these plugins don’t work side by side straight out of the box.

When I posted a guide on how to change some javascript file inside of the CommentLuv plugin, the plugin’s author – Andrew Bailey – immediately posted a comment pointing me in the right direction; it is indeed possible to get these two plugins to work together without changing any source code. So I now show you exactly how to do this, should you encounter the same problem. [Read more…]

CommentLuv & Antispam Bee incompatibility

UPDATE: The author of the plugin has provided a way to make both plugins work together without changing the code (see the comments below). So you may just ignore my rambling below and go directly to my follow-up post that explains the exact procedure to make these plugins work together.

CommentLuv Editor ScreenshotWhen I installed the CommentLuv plugin on my blog, I wanted to make sure I can handle the additional comment spam that this would certainly cause. So I set out to find a good antispam plugin and managed to find it in the free AntiSpam Bee (I won’t go much into detail as to why I don’t use Akismet, suffice it to say that it is not free and it is controversial in many ways).

I soon had to discover though, that AntiSpam Bee is conflicting with the CommentLuv plugin. After a bit of tinkering, I found out why this is the case and can now show you a quick hack to get both of these to work together. [Read more…]

I Luv your Comments!

Comments & Backlinks ConceptI recently commented on a post at and came in contact with the plugin CommentLuv. I had read about it before, but this was the first time that I actually used it as a commenter. The experience was pretty good, that’s why I now have integrated both CommentLuv and KeywordLuv on my blog.

If you don’t already know what CommentLuv is, read on to find out what makes this particular plugin a welcome addition to blogs that could do with a little more promotion! [Read more…]

Don’t Ignore this Feeling!

Don't Ignore this Feeling! Image of a man reflecting on life.I am not a very emotional person. I don’t “listen to my gut“, I rather tend to over-analyze things and I base my decisions on intellectual reasoning.

That’s why I got most of the important decisions in my life wrong so far!

I have been working at my current job for nearly 10 years now. It has often been an interesting journey, and I sure learned a lot about a whole bunch of stuff. But for years now a feeling grew inside of me which I simply cannot ignore anymore.

Whenever I was unsatisfied with my job, I tried to argue to myself that I should be happy to be where I am… that there are people out there that don’t have a job at all… that there are people who are enduring much worse than what I have to put up with each and every day. But you know what? Knowing that there are worse circumstances than mine doesn’t make me any unhappier! [Read more…]
